Folio privacy policy

Effective 2 November 2026 · Applies to the Folio Chrome extension and the Folio web preview

Folio is a reading app that keeps your library on your own device. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no fees. This policy explains what Folio stores and what it never does.

What Folio stores, and where

When you import a book or document, Folio saves a copy of the file, its cover or preview, your reading position, bookmarks and highlights in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB) on your device. This data is used only to show you your library and let you keep reading.

What Folio does not do

Network access

The Folio extension published in the Chrome Web Store makes no network requests with your data. It does not request access to any website. The web preview is a static page: its files are downloaded from GitHub Pages like any website, but your books and notes stay in your browser and are never uploaded.

Permissions

The extension requests one permission, unlimited storage, so that large book libraries can be kept on your device without the browser removing them under storage pressure.

Your control over your data

You can remove any book in Folio, which also removes its bookmarks and highlights. You can download a backup of your library or export your notes at any time from Storage & backup. Uninstalling the extension or clearing your browser's site data deletes the local library. Backups you download are ordinary files under your control and are not encrypted.

Children

Folio does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect information at all.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new effective date. Questions can be raised through the project's issue tracker.
